Diy Gold Plated Crystal Coaster

I am Oneka Benn Schwartz, manufacturer and owner of Design Pretty, and we specialize in gemstone decoration. Gemstone decor is so popular these days, and even though I’ve seen tons of tutorials on agate coasters in the past, they still paint the edges (which wear out over time).

I prefer to use a real sheet metal because this technique looks more finished and lasts longer. This is a great way to equip your coffee table and protect it from moisture.

  • Gilding glue
  • Copper foil
  • Bumper cabinet (about 4 per coaster)
  • Brush (2)
  • Wiring harness
  • Agate Coasters
  • Scissors
  • Cotton swab
  • Lubricate (optional)

Step one: Cut your sheet into ¾-inch strips.

Step two: Apply a thin layer of golden glue to the rough edge of the coaster. Set the trivet aside for 15 minutes (or until the adhesive stops appearing milky white).

Once the glue is sticky, place the sheet metal strip on your work surface, then place the edge of the coaster directly on the sheet metal and roll until the sheet metal covers the edge of the coaster. Usually, one or two strips are needed to cover an entire coaster.

Step three: Once the sheet metal is on the coaster, use your dishes to wipe off the excess sheet metal from the coaster.

Then repeat the process by applying another layer of golden glue until it is sticky. Then apply a second layer of aluminum foil and wipe off the excess with your dishes.

Step four: If you have a piece of sheet metal that has spilled around the edges and you want to clean it, you can use a cotton swab and Glibber to eliminate the defects.

Step five: Using your second brush, apply a thin layer of polyurethane to the edges of the panels of your coasters. Once dry, I like to apply a second coat for extra protection.

Step six: Finally, add the cabinet bumpers to the bottom of your coasters to prevent them from scratching their surfaces. And there you have it – your own fabulous agate coasters.
